When you’re following Jesus pretty closely, Lent as a season is not so much “a chance for us to draw near to him and a chance to evaluate our relationship with Christ,” but rather a sign of solidarity with the Body of Christ. In Orthodoxy, the whole people is united to go thru a series of disciplines and ceremonies that connect us to one another, and to Christ. For us it’s usually the only time of the year when most of us are “all on the same page.” That’s the meaning it has for me. It’s unfortunate that in some years, like the current one for example, the Orthodox calendar is so far off the Western one that we’re only starting Lent when you are on the verge of Holy Week. That always bothers me, because for me there’s only one Church, denominations have little impact on my life, and I’d like to be in sync with all the brethren, not just the Greeks, Arabs and Slavs.
I suppose it’s good to get shaken out of our “cultural selfishness” if that will help us be better followers of the Way, but I think we needn’t go as far as the tragedies of the Rwanda or Sudan genocides to heighten our awareness of the suffering world. Most of us can do nothing more than pray for the victims of the world system’s disorders—except when those victims are right next door, in our neighborhoods or even in our own homes. We can give monetary alms to large causes, or to the beggar who tries to hustle us on the street. But for those who really do need help, nearby, the best alms is our genuine concern, our willingness to stop in our tracks and do for them what they cannot do for themselves. That’s the alms of laying down our lives for one another, and that’s what gives meaning to what Jesus does for us, on the Cross, and in every day of our lives.
